# Copay

*Insurance — Finicade finance glossary*

A copay is a fixed fee you pay for a specific service — $30 for a doctor visit, $10 for a prescription — regardless of the total cost. It's a blunt tool for discouraging unnecessary use, and it's predictable, which is its advantage over coinsurance. Copays may or may not count towards your deductible depending on the plan, which is one of the most common sources of surprise medical bills.
