# Dependent

*Taxes — Finicade finance glossary*

A dependent is a child or relative you support who unlocks tax credits and better filing status. The tests cover relationship, residence, age and support, and they're stricter than intuition — a partner you support may qualify as a relative, while a child who provides most of their own support may not. Only one taxpayer can claim a given dependent, which makes it a recurring fight in separated families.
