# Net Income

*Accounting & Reporting — Finicade finance glossary*

Net income is what remains after every expense, interest and tax — the bottom line, and the input to earnings per share. It's an accrual figure, not cash: a profitable company can run out of money and a loss-making one can generate cash. That gap is why the cash flow statement exists, and why comparing net income to operating cash flow over several years is a standard quality-of-earnings test.
