A node is a computer that stores a blockchain and independently verifies every transaction against the rules. Full nodes are what make the system trustless: they let you confirm the state yourself rather than trusting anyone's word. The hardware needed to run one is the practical ceiling on how much throughput a chain can add without becoming something only institutions can verify.
