# Pay Stub

*Everyday Money — Finicade finance glossary*

A pay stub is the itemised breakdown that comes with your pay: gross earnings at the top, every deduction in the middle, net pay at the bottom. Reading it once a year is worth real money — it's where you catch a wrong tax code, a pension contribution that never started, a benefit you're paying for twice, or overtime that wasn't counted. The year-to-date column is also the fastest way to check whether your withholding is on track before it becomes a tax bill.
