Real estate commission is the percentage of a sale price paid to agents — historically 5–6% in the US and far lower in most other countries.

Real estate commission is the percentage of the sale price paid to agents, historically 5–6% in the US split between both sides and far lower in most other countries. The seller traditionally paid both, which meant the buyer's agent was paid by the other party — a structural conflict at the heart of the 2024 antitrust settlements that made buyer-side fees separately negotiated.
