# Spot Bitcoin ETF

*Crypto & Digital Assets — Finicade finance glossary*

A spot Bitcoin ETF holds actual Bitcoin and trades on a stock exchange, letting investors gain exposure through an ordinary brokerage account. US approval in January 2024 followed a decade of rejections and brought tens of billions of institutional money in within months. What it removes is self-custody and the associated key management; what it adds is a management fee and a familiar tax wrapper.
