# Ticker Symbol

*Markets & Instruments — Finicade finance glossary*

A ticker symbol is the short code identifying a security on an exchange. Codes are exchange-specific and reused after a company leaves, which produces a recurring and genuinely costly confusion: retail investors have repeatedly bought the wrong company's shares after a similar ticker appeared in the news, sending a bankrupt shell up several hundred percent. Always confirm the security by name and exchange, not by the letters.
