# Total Value Locked

*Crypto & Digital Assets — Finicade finance glossary*

Total value locked measures the dollar value of assets deposited in a DeFi protocol, and it's the sector's headline size metric. It flatters badly in two ways: it rises when token prices rise without any new deposits, and the same dollar can be counted several times as it's redeposited across protocols. It measures deposits, not revenue, users or safety.
