An altcoin is any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin, a category covering everything from major networks to tokens created in an afternoon. The base rate is unforgiving: the large majority of tokens launched in any cycle end up near zero, and studies of past cycles find survival rates in the low single digits. Altcoins are also more volatile than Bitcoin in both directions, which is the entire attraction.
