CAMELS Rating
Also called: CAMELS, supervisory rating
CAMELS is the confidential supervisory rating US regulators assign banks on Capital, Asset quality, Management, Earnings, Liquidity and Sensitivity to market risk, scored 1 to 5. Banks are not permitted to disclose their rating, so it surfaces only through enforcement actions. Ratings of 4 or 5 place a bank on the problem list, a count that is published in aggregate and watched as a stress indicator.
