Delinquency

Also called: delinquent account, past due, arrears

A delinquency is a payment past its due date, reported in 30-day buckets: 30, 60, 90, 120 days late. The first report is the expensive one — the score damage from 30 days late is a large multiple of the late fee — and each further bucket compounds it. Delinquency is the stage where lenders are still willing to negotiate: forbearance, a modified plan, or a hardship program are all far easier to get before the account is charged off.
