Exit

Also called: liquidity event, startup exit

An exit is the event that converts illiquid equity into cash or listed shares — an acquisition, an IPO, or occasionally a secondary sale. Acquisitions vastly outnumber IPOs. What each shareholder actually receives depends on the preference stack rather than the headline price, which is why founders should model the waterfall at several exit values before signing terms.
