Insurance Float
Also called: insurance reserves invested
Float is the money an insurer holds between collecting premiums and paying claims, which it invests in the meantime. It is effectively borrowed capital, and if underwriting breaks even it is borrowed at zero cost — the mechanism behind Berkshire Hathaway's growth. Float is only free while underwriting discipline holds; the temptation to write bad business to grow it is what destroys insurers.
