Trial Balance

Also called: trial balance report, unadjusted trial balance

A trial balance lists every ledger account with its balance, to check that total debits equal total credits before statements are prepared. It catches arithmetic and one-sided posting errors. It cannot catch a transaction posted to the wrong account, posted twice, or omitted entirely — a balanced trial balance proves internal consistency, not correctness.
