A chargeback reverses a card payment when a cardholder disputes it, and the burden of proof sits with the merchant. It's genuine consumer protection and a genuine merchant cost: fees apply per dispute regardless of outcome, and excessive rates can cost a merchant its ability to accept cards. Friendly fraud — customers disputing purchases they made and received — is now a large share of the total.
