Deductible

Also called: excess, policy deductible

A deductible is what you pay before the insurer pays anything. It exists to defeat moral hazard and to strip out small claims whose handling cost exceeds their value. Choosing one is a straight trade: a higher deductible cuts the premium, so the right level is the largest amount you could absorb from your emergency fund without distress. Insuring below that line means paying a margin to a company for money you already have.
