Suspicious Activity Report

Also called: SAR, suspicious transaction report, STR

A suspicious activity report is a confidential filing a financial institution makes to authorities when a transaction looks like it may involve criminal proceeds. Tipping off the customer that one has been filed is itself an offence. Volumes are enormous — millions annually in the US alone — and the resulting signal-to-noise problem is the central criticism of the regime.
