Trading Volume

Volume is the number of shares or contracts traded in a period, and it's the conviction check on any price move. A breakout on heavy volume is treated as more reliable than one on thin volume, since it implies broad participation rather than a few orders in an empty book. Volume also determines whether a position can be exited without moving the price against you.
