Portfolio Manager

Also called: PM, investment manager

A portfolio manager makes the buy and sell decisions for a fund and owns its performance against a benchmark. It's the profession's decision-making seat and is measured relentlessly — daily against the index, quarterly by clients, annually by compensation. Because skill and luck are so hard to separate over short horizons, careers are frequently made and ended by periods too short to be statistically meaningful.
