What the job actually is

Most financial analysis treats the world as a machine: estimate the distribution, optimise against it, size the position. A strategist works on the problems where that fails, because the thing on the other side is not a distribution — it is a party with its own information, its own incentives and its own view about what you are going to do.

The work is deciding what to believe about a counterparty and acting on it. Is that threat something they would actually carry out, or a statement they will quietly drop? Is this asset cheap, or is it being offered to you precisely because the seller knows something? How hard should you bid when winning is itself evidence that you were the most optimistic person in the room?

The discipline is unglamorous: write down who decides, what they can do, and what each outcome is worth to them — in their terms, not yours. Most strategic mistakes are not failures of cleverness but of bookkeeping, where somebody left the counterparty's reputation, career risk or outside option out of the payoff and then reasoned impeccably from the wrong numbers.

• Which contract terms make honesty the counterparty's own best move
• When a deal that looks cheap is cheap because somebody else knows more
