What the job actually is
The CRO measures, limits and reports the firm's risk, and the measuring is the easy part. Every large institution can produce a value-at-risk number by 7am. The job is knowing when that number is lying.
It usually lies in the same way: quietly, on the days that matter. VaR is calibrated on the recent past, assumes you can exit at the marked price, and treats a crowded one-sided position as no riskier than a diversified one. On the days a firm actually blows up, the headline number reads green right until the loss lands somewhere the model never assigned probability to.
The other half of the job is resisting the opposite failure. A CRO who de-risks into every scare destroys the returns the firm exists to earn and is removed just as surely — slower, and with better manners. Being right about the tail is worth nothing if you were also 'right' about the four panics that were nothing.
